A xenon flash lamp is filled with high-purity xenon noble gas inside the quartz tube. Normally, the xenon gas is insulated and does not conduct electricity or emit light.
When an instantaneous high-voltage pulse is applied to the two electrodes of the tube, the xenon gas is broken down and ionized, turning into a conductive state instantly. A large current passes through the xenon gas, exciting the xenon atoms and releasing extremely bright white light in a very short moment, which forms the flash effect.
